By Best Area To Stay In editorial desk ·

The short answer

Use the Stockholm guide to choose between rail convenience in Norrmalm, historic streets in Gamla Stan and plans around Mariatorget in Södermalm.

Find your Stockholm base

The Stockholm area guide compares three reasons to stay. Start with Norrmalm for rail arrivals. Choose Gamla Stan if the old-town setting matters most. Look at Mariatorget in Södermalm when your plans focus on that part of the city.

What to compare before booking

Central Station is a useful reference, but a hotel search area is not a station exit. The guide gives the checked street address for each hotel. Use it to plan the last leg with your bags. For the Old Town, ask about the approach to the door as well as the route from the train.

The room needs its own check. Confirm beds, guest capacity and outlook in the category you will book. An area can fit your plans while one of its rooms does not. No district name guarantees a low price or a quiet night.

Sources behind the choices

The city guide links its district facts to Visit Stockholm, its hotel facts to the owners and its rail notes to the airport or operator. Check dates appear with the facts. We have not stayed at these hotels. If you find a detail that needs correction, send the page and a source.

Choose another destination

Return to the city finder to compare the available countries. For a Swiss stop, the Switzerland directory opens the Zurich guide. Each guide starts with that city's own area choices and arrival needs.
