By Best Area To Stay In editorial desk ·
The short answer
Compare the Bund for riverfront plans, Jing'an for the PuLi-side setting or Lujiazui for a Pudong base. Confirm the actual view, room separation and arrival station or airport.
These Shanghai hotel areas use three fixed properties. Their fit labels are our judgment; room and location facts come from the linked owners. Compare the setting, then the exact room name. A landmark hotel can face the river without every bedroom doing so, and a larger room can remain open-plan rather than giving guests a separate sleeping space.
The Bund offers the Fairmont Peace Hotel choice with inward and river-facing categories. Jing'an offers PuLi room layouts and park/city outlooks. Lujiazui offers Grand Hyatt City View versus River View, with club access checked separately.

Choose where to stay in Shanghai through the setting you want and the room you will return to. The Bund gives a riverfront comparison on the Fairmont Peace Hotel side. Jing'an gives another city base around The PuLi. Lujiazui puts the stay in Pudong around Jin Mao Tower. We compare three real guest addresses, including room views and privacy layouts that a broad hotel search can miss.
Start with the Bund for a stay shaped by that riverfront setting. Compare Jing'an for plans around the Changde Road base, or Lujiazui for a Pudong stay. Then choose the exact room. A premium Gold category can face inward, a studio screen is not another bedroom, and City View differs from River View even inside a high-rise hotel.
The Bund is our first comparison when the riverfront setting shapes the stay. Fairmont Peace Hotel anchors it at 20 Nanjing Road East. The owner places the hotel on the Bund, facing Pudong across the Huangpu River. Choose this address because you want to return to that setting, then compare the trips to Jing'an or Lujiazui on the other days.
The room name does not always tell the story you might expect from a premium category. The owner describes Fairmont Gold rooms as interior-facing. Those rooms have their own benefits, but Gold should not be read as a river-view upgrade. If the view is the reason to choose the hotel, compare the actual outlook before paying for a broader level of service.
The separate Signature Riverview Suite description gives the river-facing option. That does not mean every suite shares it. Ask for the exact category and view on the booking, especially if a merchant uses a shorter room label. A gallery can show the hotel's most striking outlook without making it part of every room at the same address.
Choose the beds and privacy layout separately from the outlook. The owner lists king and twin choices in different categories, as well as suites with a living area. If two guests need separate beds or one needs to sleep while another works, confirm the actual room plan. A premium label cannot answer all those questions at once.
For arrival, use the guest address rather than only a large riverfront landmark. Fairmont's current contact page gives Nanjing Road East and offers concierge help with transfers. Confirm the pickup and last street approach if you arrange one. The riverfront setting can make the hotel easy to recognise without making every vehicle or station approach the same.
Compare the Bund with the rest of the visit before choosing the whole stay for one view. If most days begin in Jing'an or Pudong, test those trips from the actual hotel. If time on the Bund is the repeated plan, the setting has a clear role. The better choice depends on the hours you will spend here as well as the room you book.
Compare Jing'an when the Changde Road setting fits the places you plan to use. The PuLi Shanghai gives this choice a real address at number 1. The owner separates room types with park and skyline outlooks. Start with the location, then compare those room details. A calm-looking hotel photograph does not prove that every category has the same view or layout.
The owner's Deluxe Room description gives a skyline outlook. Grand Room looks towards Jing An Park, while Grand Studio combines park and city views. Choose the outlook that matters to you in the exact category. An upgrade in space can also change the view, so compare the full description rather than treating the room names as a simple ladder from small to large.
These studio-style rooms use a sliding silk screen to divide open space. That is a layout feature, not an additional enclosed bedroom. If visual privacy, a fixed door or the bathroom arrangement matters, ask about the actual floor plan. A screen may suit one party well without solving another party's need for fully separate sleeping areas.
Suite names need a close look too. The current Junior Suite description says the bedroom and living area flow together in an open plan. The Deluxe Suite has a separate lounge area. Choose the one that fits how guests will use the room. A suite can offer more space without giving the same separation that another suite category provides.
For a stay where one person works while another rests, ask how the living and sleeping areas connect. Confirm the doors and actual route to the bathroom as well. The useful question is whether the layout fits the hours you will keep. A larger room and an appealing seating area do not by themselves settle privacy between guests.
Compare the Jing'an base with Bund and Lujiazui plans before choosing it mainly for the room design. A room can be a good fit while the daily route still needs a check. Use Changde Road 1 for the last leg from the station or transfer. The exact entrance matters more than a broad central-Shanghai description when you arrive with bags.
Lujiazui gives the Pudong comparison through Grand Hyatt Shanghai in Jin Mao Tower. The owner gives 88 Century Avenue as its guest address. The merchant also uses Shiji Avenue for the same street. Save the tower name and hotel together for arrival. A familiar skyline building does not replace the actual guest entrance and route to hotel reception.
The current 1 Queen Bed page is labelled City View. The owner's wider room list also has River View categories. Choose the exact outlook rather than assuming that a room in a high-rise tower faces the river. The hotel can have a panoramic setting while individual bedrooms face different directions. A skyline photograph does not settle the category on sale.
Club Access is another separate part of the room name. Compare it independently from the view and the bed setup. A room can have club access without being the River View option you wanted, or have the view without the same lounge terms. Ask what the actual category includes for the guests on your booking before choosing by a short merchant label.
For shared rooms, check the queen/king choice or separate twin beds in the actual category. The tower setting does not tell you whether the guests will have separate beds. If a child or another adult will share, confirm the real sleeping plan and rate terms. A maximum guest count should not stand in for the beds that will be made on arrival.
Plan the hotel arrival inside Jin Mao Tower as well as the route to the street. Ask where the vehicle should stop and how to reach hotel reception. A tower can have several uses and entrances, so a correct building name may still leave an internal leg. Confirm that part if luggage or personal access needs affect your party.
Choose Lujiazui when Pudong plans and the room outlook work together. For repeated Bund or Jing'an days, test the journeys before choosing the whole visit across the river. A river view can be worth the choice, but it does not shorten every trip in the itinerary. Give the daily routes their own comparison beside the appeal of the tower room.
The map uses licensed OpenStreetMap locations for two hotel buildings and Jin Mao Tower, where Grand Hyatt is based. It compares positions rather than showing river crossings or street routes. Follow the hotel’s directions to reception and the correct lift entrance inside the tower.

Names and guest addresses were compared with owner information and public Trip.com property records in October 2026. These cards focus on the setting and actual room view or privacy, without a live rate or guest score used to rank them. The three properties are specific examples at fixed streets. Confirm the exact room and arrival for your party before choosing the booking terms.
Fairmont Peace Hotel
Best for: A Bund stay with the exact room outlook chosen deliberately.
Location: 20 Nanjing Road East, 200002 Shanghai
Official evidence: The owner describes Fairmont Gold as interior-facing and lists a separate Signature Riverview Suite.
Trade-off: A premium category is not automatically a river-view room.
Before booking: Confirm the outlook and beds in the actual room label before paying.
Shanghai arrivals: Pudong, Hongqiao and the station on the ticket
Read the airport code on the actual flight first. Pudong International Airport is PVG; Hongqiao International Airport is SHA. Choose the current operator information for that airport, then the terminal and city route. A broad Shanghai airport label should not decide the transfer. Save the correct airport beside the hotel guest address so the final plan uses both.
Shanghai Airport's current information includes the Airport Link Line alongside other transport choices. Read the actual stops and useful onward connection rather than assuming an airport-branded rail service reaches the Bund, Jing'an or Jin Mao Tower directly. The rail leg and the final hotel approach need separate checks. We do not reproduce a fixed frequency or journey time from the airport overview.
Hongqiao Airport and Hongqiao Railway Station also need precise names in the plan. They are related arrival references, not the same label as Shanghai Railway Station. Grand Hyatt's owner lists those railway and airport points separately. Check which one appears on your actual ticket before choosing the transfer to Century Avenue or another guest street.
For Fairmont Peace Hotel, use Nanjing Road East 20 and confirm the useful guest entrance with the hotel if you arrange a transfer. For The PuLi, use Changde Road 1 rather than only the Jing'an area name. For Grand Hyatt, keep Jin Mao Tower and the hotel together, then check the route from the street to hotel reception inside the building.
For a return flight or onward train, read the airport or station again rather than reversing the first arrival from memory. Check the travel date and required hour with the operator. Then plan the earlier leg from the hotel. A booking that names the right city but the wrong station can leave a poor transfer even when the room address is correct.
If bags or an access need change how you can travel, ask about the final entrance and internal room route before relying on the plan. A point on the map does not establish a step-free approach or the right lift in a shared tower. Use the confirmed hotel directions beside the current service information so the journey ends at the actual guest destination.
Shanghai choices for river views, private space and repeated city trips
For a first visit, compare the places you want to use most with the three hotel streets. The Bund, Jing'an and Lujiazui offer different settings rather than one shared centre. Test the return trip as well as the outward journey. The best area to stay in Shanghai depends on those days and the exact room, not just the most familiar skyline.
For a river-view stay, choose the outlook before the service level. Fairmont Gold illustrates why a premium label does not settle the river view. Grand Hyatt separates City View and River View as well. A room with a useful lounge benefit may still face another direction. Decide which feature matters most, then read the complete category rather than the shortest label.
For privacy, ask which bedroom doors close and how the living area is used. PuLi's open Junior Suite and separate Deluxe Suite lounge offer different ways to share time in the room. A sliding screen has a different role from an enclosed bedroom. Ask how the actual plan works if one guest will sleep while another reads or works. More floor space alone may not solve that need.
For a Pudong-led trip, Lujiazui can have a clear purpose through the Jin Mao address. For repeated Jing'an days, compare the Changde Road base. The Bund choice may fit best when you want to return to the riverfront setting often. Keep the itinerary beside the room category so a view upgrade does not hide the effect of a different base.
For a short stay between transport days, compare the full station-to-room and room-to-station journeys. A hotel chosen for one airport arrival may be less useful for the onward railway departure. A change of plans need not mean changing hotels. Compare the airports and stations on your tickets before choosing the base. Use the named services and guest entrances rather than broad city labels.
Before you choose a room
Choose the actual guest street by the days you will repeat.
Confirm the room outlook, whether inward-facing or towards the city or river in the complete room category.
Check club access separately from the room view.
Ask whether the layout has a screen, open living space or a separate lounge.
Confirm the actual beds and privacy needs for your guests.
Read PVG/SHA and the exact railway station before planning the final transfer.
Open the hotel you chose on Trip.com and check the exact room before you pay.
This is desk research from the sources linked below, with hotel location and feature checks in October 2026. We have not stayed at or tested these hotels. The area choices express our judgment about trip fit. No price, availability, safety grade or service rating is implied.
Fairmont Peace Hotel: rooms and hotel: Fairmont distinguishes the Bund setting from inward-facing Gold rooms and a named river-view suite, so a riverside hotel address does not guarantee every room's outlook.
Fairmont Peace Hotel: guest address: Fairmont gives its Nanjing Road East guest address and transfer contact, which helps arrange the actual arrival rather than assume an included airport journey.
The PuLi Shanghai: official hotel: The PuLi gives its Changde Road address in Jing'an, which helps compare the actual neighbourhood with the Bund and Pudong hotel options.
The PuLi: room outlooks and layouts: The PuLi separates skyline and park outlooks and different living-space layouts, so check whether the actual suite has a separate room or an open plan.
Grand Hyatt Shanghai: hotel information: Hyatt places the hotel in Jin Mao Tower and separates airport and railway arrival guidance, so plan from the station or terminal on your ticket.
Grand Hyatt Shanghai: 1 Queen Bed: Hyatt's named Queen category has a city view, which should not be relabelled as a river view simply because other rooms offer that outlook.
Grand Hyatt Shanghai: official room collection: Hyatt treats river outlook and club access as separate room features, so check that the exact booked category includes whichever matters to your stay.
Shanghai Airport: Pudong information: Shanghai Airport provides Pudong and Airport Link Line information, so check the actual service and onward route rather than assume every hotel has a direct rail connection.
Shanghai Airport: Hongqiao information: Shanghai Airport provides separate Hongqiao terminal information, which should be used for your actual arrival instead of applying Pudong instructions to the wrong airport.
OpenStreetMap: Fairmont Peace Hotel location: The map shows Fairmont Peace Hotel in Shanghai so you can compare locations; ask the property which entrance to use with your luggage.
OpenStreetMap: The PuLi Shanghai location: The map shows The PuLi Shanghai in Shanghai so you can compare locations; ask the property which entrance to use with your luggage.
OpenStreetMap: Grand Hyatt Shanghai location: The map shows Grand Hyatt Shanghai in Shanghai so you can compare locations; ask the property which entrance to use with your luggage.

Where should I stay in Shanghai for the first time?
Compare the Bund for riverfront-setting plans, Jing'an around Changde Road for days there, or Lujiazui for a Pudong base. Test your repeated journeys from the actual hotel streets. Then confirm the exact view and room layout before choosing the booking terms.
Does Fairmont Gold mean a river view at Peace Hotel?
The owner describes Fairmont Gold rooms as interior-facing. Signature Riverview Suite is a separate category. Choose the actual outlook rather than assuming a premium level means a river-facing bedroom. If the view decides the stay, confirm it in the complete room name before paying.
Does a PuLi suite always have a separate living room?
No. The current Junior Suite description is open-plan, while Deluxe Suite has a separate lounge area. The studio-style room categories also use sliding screens. Ask for the exact layout if a door or private sleeping area matters to your party, rather than relying on the word suite.
Does every Grand Hyatt room have the same river view?
The named 1 Queen Bed page is City View, and the owner lists separate River View categories. Club Access is another part of the room name to check. A high-rise setting does not make those views or benefits identical. Confirm the complete category that is actually on sale.
Can I use one airport plan for every Shanghai flight?
Read the actual code and terminal first. PVG and SHA are distinct airport arrivals, and the city rail or transfer leg needs to fit the hotel. Check the onward railway station separately too. A broad Shanghai label does not settle the correct departure point or final guest entrance.
Verdict: where to stay in Shanghai
Choose where to stay in Shanghai through the setting, real street and exact room together. The Bund, Jing'an and Lujiazui give different reasons to stay. Confirm the river outlook or privacy layout that matters, then the airport or station on your actual ticket. A premium category or a skyline photograph cannot replace those details in the full-stay choice.
