Marrakech areas at a glance

Compare the Medina, Guéliz and Hivernage through three named hotels. Choose the setting that suits your daily plans, then confirm the room view and full route from drop-off to reception.

The Medina puts the old-quarter setting first. Guéliz fits plans in the new city. Hivernage gives a hotel-led stay a useful starting point. Confirm the exact door approach and room layout before booking.

Start deciding where to stay in Marrakech with the setting you want around your room. The Medina is the historic-quarter choice. Guéliz and Hivernage offer a different, new-city base.

A courtyard or pool photo will not tell you the area. It also will not show how to reach the door with your bags. Choose the area first.

Then read the room and arrival details.

Choose the Medina if the old-quarter setting is the point of the trip. Compare Guéliz for a stay built around the new city. Look at Hivernage when hotel facilities and a pool carry more weight. Our checked Medina option is a hotel at Rue de la Koutoubia, not a guide to every riad's entrance. In all three areas, ask about the room outlook and the final approach.

Where to stay in Marrakech: area choices

Medina near Rue de la Koutoubia

Choose the Medina if you want the historic setting to be part of the hours around your hotel. The Moroccan tourist office separates this old-quarter setting from the new-city districts. That is a useful first split. It lets you decide whether returning to old streets matters more than the facilities and room category of a hotel elsewhere.

Our checked choice is Les Jardins de la Koutoubia at 26 Rue de la Koutoubia. The owner lists Medina and Patio rooms as distinct types. Look past the hotel's overall photos. A room facing the old city is a different booking from one facing the patio. Ask which view your chosen room gives you.

This is a named hotel choice, not a claim that all Medina accommodation works the same way. If you choose a riad in another lane, check the approach again. Ask where the driver stops and whether the property can explain the remaining approach. Save those directions before the trip, especially if you arrive after dark or with large bags.

Guéliz / Gueliz

Guéliz is worth comparing when you want a new-city base rather than a room in the old quarter. Visit Morocco distinguishes it from the Medina. Use it as a deliberate choice for your daily plans, not as an automatic fallback when a riad search becomes confusing. First decide where you expect to begin and end most days.

Radisson Blu Hotel, Marrakech Carré Eden is the checked anchor here. Its official address is 166-176 Avenue Mohamed V. The owner lists rooms with balconies and distinct pool-view options. It also lists places to eat and a spa. Other Guéliz hotels may have quite different features.

A Guéliz base still needs a plan for time in the Medina. Work out how you will get there and return at the hours you expect to travel. For a visit centred on the old quarter, the extra journey may outweigh the room you prefer here. For plans in the new city, the same address may be a much better fit.

Hivernage

Hivernage is the third choice to compare when the hotel itself is part of the trip. The tourist office places it in the new city, apart from the Medina. Our checked example is Novotel Marrakech Hivernage on Rue Haroun Errachid. Start with that real address when comparing arrival plans and days out.

Accor lists a swimming pool, air conditioning and a restaurant at the Novotel. It also offers room layouts with a sofa bed. Those are useful details for a family shortlist, but they are not a promise that any room fits any party. Check how many guests the room holds. Ask whether the sofa bed will be made up for your group.

Choose Hivernage because the hotel and setting suit the hours you will spend there. Do not choose it on a blanket promise of quiet. A pool-facing room and a street-facing room can answer different needs, while both share the same district name. Ask about outlook and activity when deciding between the available categories.

The map compares the three hotel locations, using Accor’s published Novotel position and licensed OpenStreetMap locations for Jardins de la Koutoubia and Radisson. The railway station is a broad arrival reference. Plan the actual streets, guest entrances and vehicle stops separately; the markers do not give journey times.

Marrakech arrivals: airport pickup, railway station and the last approach

For a Menara airport arrival, start with the exact hotel address and ask the property how it wants you to arrive. ONDA provides the airport's official taxi and bus information page. We do not give a fixed fare or bus timetable here. Check current options for your landing time, then decide how to cover the final approach with your bags.

For Les Jardins de la Koutoubia, save 26 Rue de la Koutoubia and ask for the current drop-off instructions. If you book a different Medina property, do not reuse those directions. A riad in another lane may have a different meeting point. Ask who will meet you and where before relying on a map pin after arrival.

For Guéliz or Hivernage, keep the street and property name together in the pickup details. The Radisson is on Avenue Mohamed V; the Novotel is on Rue Haroun Errachid. If you arrange a transfer, check its full terms. Give the RAK pickup service your flight number and agree its wait limit for delays. A shuttle symbol does not explain those terms.

For a rail arrival, use ONCF's official travel site to check the train you will actually take. Our station point is a broad reference, not an exit or taxi rank. Continue the plan from the station to your hotel's entrance. For an early departure, confirm the full pickup and station arrival plan rather than treating a nearby area name as enough.

Marrakech stays for first visits and hotel time

For a first visit centred on the old quarter, start with the Medina. Choose a known property and read its actual room types. The checked Jardins hotel has categories with different outlooks. Do not let the broad wish to stay in the Medina distract from the room you are paying for or how you will reach it.

For a family, compare the room plan at the same time as the area. Novotel publishes sofa-bed categories, while Jardins lists different room and suite capacities. Those facts are a start, though they do not settle the fit for your group. Give the hotel your group's size and ages. Ask it to confirm the exact room type you plan to book.

For time in the hotel, decide which feature is essential. A pool, balcony or a view of the old city can point to different properties and categories. Check the feature and its current terms directly. A room beside a pool may suit daytime use. It may not have the view a light sleeper would choose.

For a riad-led trip, this shortlist has a limit: it compares three hotels, not a checked set of small riads. If the courtyard-house stay itself is your main aim, research that property on its own terms. Confirm the approach and room access rather than treating this guide's Medina hotel as evidence for another building.

If you want resort time with occasional city visits, compare Palmeraie or an out-of-city property separately. Include the journeys it adds before treating it like a Medina, Guéliz or Hivernage stay. The route back after dinner or an outing can matter as much as the room facilities.

Marrakech sources, check dates and corrections

This is desk research from the sources linked below, with hotel location and feature checks in October 2026. We have not stayed at or tested these hotels. The area choices express our judgment about trip fit. No price, availability, safety grade or service rating is implied.

A dated check records what the source said at that point. It does not guarantee that the stay or route is unchanged. If you spot an error, send the page and the correction. We can then recheck the affected hotel or area, or arrival note.

FAQ: choosing a base in Marrakech

Where should I stay in Marrakech for a first visit?

Start with the Medina if the historic setting is the main reason for coming. Compare Guéliz or Hivernage when a new-city hotel and its features matter more. Look at the exact property, room category and door approach. A first-visit label alone will not tell you which stay fits your plans.

Is it better to stay in the Medina or Guéliz?

Choose the Medina for the old-quarter surroundings. Choose Guéliz when its new-city setting suits the places you will use. The checked Radisson is on Avenue Mohamed V, while our Medina hotel is on Rue de la Koutoubia. Compare those real addresses and the trips between your plans before deciding.

Can a taxi reach every Marrakech riad entrance?

Do not assume that it can. Ask the property for its current drop-off point and the route from there to reception. Save those instructions before arrival. Our checked Medina choice is a hotel at a named street address; its approach is not evidence for every riad in the old quarter.

Is Hivernage a useful choice for a family hotel stay?

It is worth comparing through the actual hotel and room. The checked Novotel lists a swimming pool and sofa-bed categories. Confirm the room's guest limit and bed setup.

Check the pool terms for your dates. Those details help you choose for your family. A district label or hotel photo is too broad.

Verdict: where to stay in Marrakech

The best answer to where to stay in Marrakech is to choose the setting before the room photo. Start with the Medina for the old quarter, Guéliz for a new-city base or Hivernage for a hotel-led stay. Then check the outlook and arrival approach of the actual property. The right district still needs the right room.
