Choose Casco Viejo for the historic setting, Avenida Balboa for a waterfront-facing base, or El Cangrejo for plans in the modern city.

Panama City areas at a glance

Panama City's hotel areas answer different questions. Casco Viejo offers the old-quarter setting. Avenida Balboa is a waterfront corridor. El Cangrejo is a modern-city neighbourhood. Compare the reason to stay with the journey you will need, rather than reading a central label as a promise that the whole city is walkable.

Start in Casco Viejo for historic surroundings, on Avenida Balboa for a waterfront-facing hotel or in El Cangrejo for plans there. The last leg from a station and the view from a room need their own checks.

Work out where to stay in Panama City by separating the old quarter from the modern waterfront and the streets of El Cangrejo. A bay-view room is a different choice from one in Casco Viejo. Both can appear in the same city search. Start with the setting you want each day. Then check the hotel door and the room you will book.

Choose Casco Viejo for historic surroundings and days built around the old quarter. Look at Avenida Balboa when the waterfront setting and a larger hotel appeal. Compare El Cangrejo for a base in the modern city, with a separate plan for the old quarter. None puts every Panama City sight outside your door. Check your airport arrival and the journeys you will make most often.

Where to stay in Panama City: area choices

Casco Viejo / Casco Antiguo

Casco Viejo is the starting choice when the old quarter is the main reason for your visit. The national tourism site also calls this area Casco Antiguo. Use both names when reading directions. Our checked hotel is in San Felipe, with its own street address, rather than somewhere vaguely described as close to the historic centre.

Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo is at Calle Primera Oeste. Accor places it on the waterfront and lists a pool deck, dining and a rooftop bar. That combination suits someone who wants the old-quarter setting with substantial hotel facilities. It does not mean that every category includes an ocean view or that every bedroom faces away from evening activity.

Choose this base for the hours you will spend in and around Casco, then plan your other days. A canal visit or an appointment in the modern city still needs its own journey. If your schedule is mostly elsewhere, compare the value of returning to the old quarter each evening with the extra travel that creates.

Avenida Balboa waterfront

Compare Avenida Balboa when the waterfront is part of how you want to spend your stay. Panama's tourism guide links this corridor with the Cinta Costera. The reason to choose it is the setting and the hotel facilities you expect to use. It is not another name for Casco Viejo, and a city bay should not be confused with a beach resort.

Hilton Panama gives this option a fixed point at Avenida Balboa and Aquilino de la Guardia. The owner lists a rooftop pool, a spa and several places to eat. Those features may matter if you plan to spend time in the hotel between trips. Check the current terms for any feature that matters to you.

A waterfront hotel still needs a room choice. Partial ocean view, a balcony and a higher category can describe different bookings. Read the exact category before assuming that the scene in a listing photo is the one you will see. If walking by the bay matters, check the route from the hotel entrance to the section you want to use.

El Cangrejo

El Cangrejo is a different answer from either a waterfront room or an old-quarter stay. It is worth comparing when your plans are in the modern city and you have specific addresses nearby. The tourism authority lists it among the city's accommodation areas. That supports the area as a search choice, rather than a claim that every hotel here offers the same value.

The checked Novotel is at Calle Jose I. Fabregas and Thays de Pons in El Cangrejo. Accor publishes its coordinates and lists a restaurant, fitness facilities and air conditioning. The hotel also states that it has no pool. This matters if you are comparing it with the two waterfront hotels on this page: the facilities are not interchangeable.

Use the hotel point to compare your actual daily destination. For a stay spent mainly in Casco Viejo, the fit may be weaker than the old-quarter option even if the room itself appeals. For a meeting nearby, the reverse can be true. Compare the journeys that repeat during the stay, rather than choosing solely from the airport leg.

Panama City area map and arrival reference

The map compares hotel anchors, using Accor's published coordinates for the Sofitel and Novotel. The Hilton point comes from licensed OpenStreetMap data and matches the official Avenida Balboa location. Vía Argentina is included as a broad metro reference near the modern-city choices. A point is not a station exit, a walking route or proof of step-free access.

Panama City arrivals: Tocumen to the right hotel address

Check which airport and terminal appear on your booking. For Tocumen, use the airport's current site at tocumenaero.com. Its former domain now points there. The transport page lists official taxis, Metro and bus options. Choose the route for the terminal and time on your own itinerary rather than copying an undated hotel transfer estimate.

The airport lists a connection via Metro Line 2. That does not mean one train goes from the terminal to each hotel on this page. Use Metro de Panamá's current information to check connections and operating hours. Include the last stop-to-hotel leg. Do not read the airport's broad all-hours transport heading as a promise that the Metro runs all night.

A road transfer needs the same exact destination. Sofitel is in Casco Viejo, Hilton is on Avenida Balboa and Novotel is in El Cangrejo. Save the street name as well as the hotel name. If you prebook a pickup, confirm the terminal and meeting point. Ask for the full terms; this page does not supply a flat fare or fixed drive time.

For the return trip, work backward from the airport time your airline requires. Ask your hotel about the pickup point and route, then allow for your actual departure conditions. The Hilton's location page says an airport shuttle is not available. A hotel being able to arrange a car would be a separate service, not proof of an included shuttle.

Panama City stays for sightseeing and time in the hotel

For a first sightseeing visit, Casco Viejo is our setting-led choice. It keeps the historic quarter around your hotel. If your main aim is a bay-facing room and time by a hotel pool, compare Avenida Balboa as a different kind of stay. Both can work for leisure, but they answer different wishes.

For a family, start with the room's guest limit and bed layout. Then compare the facilities you will use between outings. Both Sofitel and Hilton list pools; Novotel does not. Check the current pool conditions if that feature decides the booking. A photograph of water or a familiar hotel brand should never stand in for that check.

For a canal-focused day, none of these area names proves that you are beside the visitor site you intend to use. Identify that site first and plan its journey separately. A central city base may still make sense for the other hours of the stay. Do not turn a hotel owner's broad canal reference into a claim of a short or walkable trip.

If meetings or friends place Obarrio or San Francisco at the centre of your trip, compare that actual address first. Check a particular hotel’s room and return route against these three choices. The shortlist helps explain their trade-offs without making them the answer to every Panama City visit.

Panama City sources, check dates and corrections

This is desk research from the sources linked below, with hotel location and feature checks in October 2026. We have not stayed at or tested these hotels. The area choices express our judgment about trip fit. No price, availability, safety grade or service rating is implied.

A dated check records what the source said at that point. It does not guarantee that the stay or route is unchanged. If you spot an error, send the page and the correction. We can then recheck the affected hotel or area, or arrival note.

FAQ: choosing a base in Panama City

Where should I stay in Panama City for a first visit?

Start with Casco Viejo if the historic quarter is your main focus. Compare Avenida Balboa for a waterfront-facing hotel, or El Cangrejo if your plans are in the modern city. Choose the setting you want to use most often. None of these areas puts every Panama City sight outside the hotel.

Is Casco Viejo the same base as Avenida Balboa?

No. Casco Viejo is the historic-quarter choice in this guide. Avenida Balboa is the waterfront corridor where the checked Hilton is located. Decide whether you want the old-quarter streets around your room or the waterfront hotel setting. Compare the exact address and journeys before treating both as simply central Panama City.

Can I take the Metro from Tocumen to my hotel?

The airport lists a Metro connection through Line 2, but that does not establish a direct service to your hotel door. Check the operator's current connections and hours, then the final street leg. For a late arrival, compare the complete journey with an official road-transfer option before choosing your base.

Which checked Panama City hotels have a pool?

The official Sofitel and Hilton pages list pools. Novotel Panama City states that it does not have one. Confirm the current access terms for your travel dates and room booking. If a pool is essential, do that check before payment rather than assuming the feature from the hotel brand or a city-wide search filter.

Verdict: where to stay in Panama City

The useful answer to where to stay in Panama City is to pick the setting that supports your plans. Choose Casco Viejo for the historic quarter, Avenida Balboa for a waterfront-facing base or El Cangrejo for plans nearby. Then check the exact room and arrival route. A central label cannot replace those details. The room and pool need their own checks.
