Zurich's main station, often shown as Hauptbahnhof or HB, is a useful reference. But a hotel near it can sit in a different setting from one in the Old Town. Compare the exact side of the station and your final walk. Zurich West is a separate choice, rather than a different name for the historic centre.
The Old Town choice puts its streets around your hotel. Near HB prioritises the train journey. Zurich West fits plans in the former industrial quarter. Check the station exit and hotel address before treating any option as an easy arrival.

Decide where to stay in Zurich by separating three things that hotel listings often blur: the Old Town, a convenient walk from the main station and a base in Zurich West. They can all serve a city break. The right choice depends on whether your days revolve around historic streets, onward trains or plans in the former industrial quarter.
Choose the Old Town for a first stay built around its streets and the Limmat. Compare the main-station area if trains shape your visit or you have a short stop. Pick Zurich West when your plans focus there and you are happy to use transit for the centre. These are choices about your daily base, not hotel quality grades or promises of low prices.
Start with the Old Town if you want your hotel to feel part of the sightseeing day. Zurich Tourism places the historic centre on both sides of the Limmat. That means Old Town alone is still too broad to settle a booking. Choose the side and address that fit the places you expect to visit.
Niederdorf is the setting for Hotel Adler, our checked option here. Switzerland Tourism describes this part of the Old Town as a pedestrian area with evening street life. The fit is clear: stay here for the setting and the ability to begin on foot. Do not treat the word historic as a promise that your room will be silent.
If you travel with large bags, look at the actual approach before choosing a room. A pedestrian setting does not mean a taxi can stop at every door. Ask the hotel where a driver can leave you, or which walking route it advises from the station. That is more useful than a walking time measured from an unspecified exit.
The main-station area is worth comparing when Zurich is part of a longer rail trip. The reason to choose it is not that every sight sits beside the tracks. It is the simpler start and end to the travel days. That can matter on a one-night stop, when finding the hotel twice takes a large share of your time.
Our hotel choice is on Stampfenbachstrasse, not inside the station. Its official page gives you an address to compare with your arrival exit. Keep that distinction when browsing: near HB is a practical search area, not a formal district border. Hotels on different sides of the station can suit different onward walks.
A station base also needs a plan for your free time. Mark where you want to have dinner and how you will get back. If your rail departure is not early, an Old Town stay may give you more of the setting you came for. Do not give up that setting solely because the station looks large on a map.
Zurich West is a deliberate alternative to an Old Town base. The city's tourism guide places former industrial sites and present-day cultural places here. Choose it when those places, a meeting or friends nearby are part of your trip. It offers a different daily setting, rather than an automatic budget version of central Zurich.
Novotel Zurich City-West gives this choice a fixed point at Schiffbaustrasse. The owner places it near Schiffbau and Technopark. If your event is in this part of town, compare the precise event door with the hotel before booking. A useful local address can be a better fit than crossing town from a famous square.
The trade is the extra journey when your day focuses on the Old Town or the lake. Use the current planner to see how that journey works at the time you will return. A room here may still suit a family that wants the hotel's indoor pool. Check the pool and room rules directly rather than assuming every leisure feature is included.
The map compares the three hotel anchors. Accor publishes the coordinates for the ibis Styles and Novotel. The Hotel Adler point comes from OpenStreetMap and matches the street address published by the hotel. Points show relative position, not district borders or routes. They do not imply walking times.
The arrival reference beneath the map names the station and airport planning sources.

Hotel Adler Zürich
Best for: An Old Town stay in Niederdorf rather than a station-side stop.
Location: Rosengasse 10, 8001 Zurich
Official evidence: The hotel lists air conditioning and several family room layouts.
Trade-off: A central pedestrian setting needs an arrival plan; room outlook matters for noise.
Before booking: Ask about the door-to-drop-off route and the bed layout for your actual party.
Zurich arrivals: airport trains, HB and the last street leg
The airport is Zurich Airport, shown as ZRH. Its official transport page lists regular SBB trains to Zurich's main station. Use that as a starting route, then enter your own arrival time in the SBB planner. A published daytime interval does not tell you the first or last useful service on your travel date.
At HB, the journey is not finished until you have found the exit that suits your hotel. The station-area option here is on Stampfenbachstrasse; Hotel Adler is on Rosengasse in the Old Town. Keep those addresses in your saved directions. A promise that a hotel is minutes from the station leaves the choice of exit and your pace unstated.
If you choose Zurich West, plan directly to the hotel address rather than assuming every airport journey must include a walk across HB. SBB and ZVV can show the practical route for your arrival time. Check the final stop and whether the remaining walk works with luggage. We have not supplied a fixed tram number that could become stale.
The airport page notes early-morning weekend trains, but a weekend offer is not a promise of a weekday connection. For an early flight, build the plan backward from your required airport arrival. Check the actual date before deciding that a city hotel removes the need for an airport-area stay. No hotel should be chosen on an untested first-train assumption.
For a first visit, the Old Town is the starting choice when the setting matters most. A stay close to HB can be better if you arrive late and leave early. Work out how much free time lies between those travel legs. There is little gain in a perfect sightseeing address if you never use it in daylight.
For lake time, compare the hotel’s exact address with the particular shore you want to visit. The main-station area is separate from a lakefront base. If Seefeld leads your plans, compare a specific hotel and room there rather than treating this shortlist as all of Zurich’s shore-side options.
For nightlife, decide whether you want to sleep near the evening's plans or return to another area. The tourism office distinguishes the Old Town from the former industrial quarter. Neither label guarantees the noise level of a bedroom. Ask about the room's side, nearby late activity and whether a quiet-room request changes the category you need.
For a family, compare the beds rather than the hotel category. Hotel Adler publishes several family layouts, while the Novotel offers an indoor pool to check. Those are different reasons to shortlist them. A pool does not settle whether the room fits, and a family room label does not describe the ages or number of guests in your party.
For a car-free rail trip, choose the part of the arrival that you want to make easiest. A main-station base can reduce the departure-day burden. An Old Town base may suit the hours between trains better. Zurich West can make sense if an event is there. Use the current planner to compare the whole stay, rather than just the airport leg.

A dated check records what the source said at that point. It does not guarantee that the stay or route is unchanged. If you spot an error, send the page and the correction. We can then recheck the affected hotel or area, or arrival note.
Start with the Old Town if you want the historic setting around your hotel. Compare a main-station address when your stay is short or trains shape the trip. Zurich West is a separate choice for plans there. None of those labels settles the room, so check the exact address and your daily route.
Is it better to stay near Zurich HB or in the Old Town?
Choose near HB when the start and end of your rail journey matter most. Choose the Old Town when you have time to use its setting between travel days. The two choices can be close in a broad city search, but the station exit and hotel street still affect your final walk.
Is Zurich West a good place to stay?
It can be a good fit when you have plans around Schiffbau, Technopark or the wider former industrial quarter. If your days focus on the Old Town and lake, compare the extra journeys first. Choose it for a reason tied to your trip, rather than assuming every hotel there costs less.
Can I stay in Zurich without renting a car?
Yes, you can plan a stay around public transport. The airport publishes train links to the main station, and the SBB and ZVV planners cover onward choices. Check your hotel's last street leg too. For an early flight, use the actual travel date rather than relying on a daytime service description.
Verdict: where to stay in Zurich
The useful answer to where to stay in Zurich is to choose which part of your trip to make easiest. Start with the Old Town for its setting, near HB for rail days, or Zurich West for plans there. Then compare the actual room and final approach. Do not let a central label replace those checks.
