The short answer
Choose South Bank for a river-led visit, Paddington for specific Heathrow or rail plans, or Shoreditch for an east-London base. Confirm the actual room and airport route.
These London hotel areas are anchored to three named properties. The comparison weighs the daily setting, room choice and final arrival leg. The area may fit your trip. The room must fit your party too. Check both before paying.
County Hall suits a South Bank stay; Praed Street puts Paddington first; Holywell Lane gives a Shoreditch base. None replaces exact room, route and outlook checks.

Choose where to stay in London by the days you want. A pin marked central is just a start. South Bank gives a different base from Paddington or Shoreditch. We compare one checked address in each setting, including a family-room option, a station-side hotel with different room sizes and a shared king-bed format in east London. Then we separate the airport journey from the routes you will repeat during the stay.
Start with South Bank around County Hall for a river-led first visit. Compare Paddington when Heathrow or rail journeys there are a real part of the plan. Choose Shoreditch when east-London evenings and local plans matter more. Check the exact hotel and room format in each area. London has several airports, so do not let advice for Heathrow stand in for the airport on your ticket.
South Bank is our first comparison for a visit built around the river. Visit London places cultural venues and sights along this Thames-side setting. The checked hotel is Premier Inn London County Hall on Belvedere Road. Use it as one specific base, then compare your other London plans rather than assuming every sight belongs to the same walk.
County Hall needs careful hotel identification. This choice is the Premier Inn, not the separate Marriott property with County Hall in its name. Save the brand and Belvedere Road address together. A search result for the building or a photograph from the river does not by itself identify the room you are booking.
The owner lists family rooms and separate room categories. That makes it useful for a party comparing a shared family setup with other London options. Confirm the beds and guest limit for the available category, including children's ages. Do not assume that the layout shown in a general brand photograph will match every room at this address.
The hotel has no on-site parking, according to its owner. If you arrive by car, check the actual off-site arrangement before choosing it. For a rail arrival, compare the suggested station exit and final street leg. A river-led base can still work well without being a room inside Waterloo or a guarantee of a view across the Thames.
Paddington is worth comparing when it solves an actual transport need. Heathrow identifies both the Heathrow Express and Elizabeth line among its London rail choices. That gives a Paddington-side stay a clear use for some trips. It does not make Paddington the default arrival for every airport or the right base for every London itinerary.
Our checked hotel is Mercure London Paddington at 144 Praed Street. Accor publishes that address beside the station and gives separate room categories. Use the full name: another Mercure in the broader Paddington area can have a different street and entrance. A brand match is not enough to settle the final leg with luggage.
The room list has a Small Double. It has larger Executive choices too. An Executive category with a king bed and sofa has a different purpose from a compact double. Compare the actual guest limit and bed setup on the room you select. A central hotel with several categories should not be treated as one uniform room choice.
Weigh the transport benefit over the whole trip. If Paddington helps only on arrival, map the daily journeys before letting that first ride decide the stay. If you will return to the station for onward trains as well, the setting may help more often. The strongest reason to choose it is a repeated need, not a promise that all of London is close.
Choose Shoreditch when east London is part of the trip itself. Visit London describes its dining and evening scene and identifies Shoreditch High Street as a transport reference. Staying here can make sense when those local plans will recur. It is a different daily base from a river-led visit around Westminster and County Hall.
The checked hotel is citizenM London Shoreditch at 6 Holywell Lane. Its current official property page is hosted by Marriott, following a redirect from the citizenM address. We use that live owner page for the hotel facts. Its bedroom description says the format is for two adults with a king bed; that is more useful than a generic booking widget's guest selector.
A shared large bed suits some pairs and does not solve a separate-bed need. Confirm the actual category if you need another layout or an accessible room. The owner also describes communal living spaces and dining. Those may matter if you want to spend time in the hotel, but they do not establish the size or privacy of a bedroom.
Compare the evening return with the following morning. A Shoreditch base can fit nights in the area while adding journeys to plans elsewhere. Ask about the booked room's outlook rather than using the neighbourhood's evening reputation as a noise measurement. If the priority is an early airport departure, check that route separately before settling on the setting.
The map uses Accor’s Mercure point and licensed OpenStreetMap hotel points. Paddington’s building is a broad station reference. Plan the actual platform and exit on their own. Check the final hotel leg with bags. The markers do not draw streets or give journey times.

Compare these bases through the full room and guest street. Details were checked in October 2026. Read the drawback beside the appeal. Ask about the beds and rate for your whole party. Keep the station approach and late return with the room you choose.
Premier Inn London County Hall
Best for: A South Bank stay with family-room categories to compare.
Location: County Hall, Belvedere Road, London SE1 7PB
Official evidence: The owner identifies the County Hall setting and lists family rooms and air conditioning.
Trade-off: The hotel has no on-site parking. A riverside address does not give every bedroom a river view.
Before booking: Confirm the room layout and hotel entrance, plus any off-site parking needs.
London arrivals: choose the airport route before the final street leg
Read the airport name on the ticket before choosing a hotel for arrival ease. Heathrow advice is not a route from Gatwick, Stansted, Luton or London City. If you use another airport, start with that airport's current transport information. Then compare the full journey to the street where you will stay, including any changes and final walk.
For Heathrow, the airport owner describes Heathrow Express to Paddington, Elizabeth line services and the Piccadilly line. Those are different options with different London stopping patterns. We do not select one by a fixed fare or journey time. Enter the actual terminal and date, then compare the complete trip to your hotel.
Use TfL's planner for local travel and its status page for current changes. A station name on a hotel description is only a starting reference. Check the exit and final approach, especially when carrying bags or planning around access needs. For an onward train, use the London station printed on the ticket rather than assuming every railway departure uses Paddington.
Save the return journey as well as the arrival. An evening out and an early flight can create different route needs. Check the service on the actual date and at the required hour. If the airport route only helps twice, weigh it against the journeys you will make each day before choosing the whole stay around it.
London bases for a first visit, family stay or evenings out
For a first visit, use South Bank as the starting comparison if the river and the sights around it shape the trip. If your plans instead focus on east London, begin with Shoreditch. A first-visit label should help you shortlist, not overrule the places you actually want to use. Plot a few repeated journeys from the hotel before deciding.
For a family, the Premier Inn's family-room categories and the Mercure's larger options are more relevant than a broad family-friendly area label. Confirm the setup for the actual guests. The citizenM description of a bedroom for two adults with one king bed answers a different need. Do not treat every hotel in a useful neighbourhood as interchangeable.
For evenings in Shoreditch, compare the walk or ride back from the venue you will use. Staying nearby may matter more than an easier airport arrival. For a theatre-led trip in another part of London, make that return journey the comparison instead. An area's reputation is less useful than the address that ends your actual evening.
If Covent Garden, Soho or Kensington leads your plans, compare a hotel there with these bases. Check the exact room and late return. Plan the airport route too, rather than force the trip into one short list. London has many useful places to stay.

This is desk research from the sources linked below, with hotel location and feature checks in October 2026. We have not stayed at or tested these hotels. The area choices express our judgment about trip fit. No price, availability, safety grade or service rating is implied.
Premier Inn: London County Hall: Premier Inn gives the County Hall hotel's Belvedere Road address and family-room information, while the lack of on-site parking needs a separate car plan.
Accor: Mercure London Paddington: Accor gives Mercure Paddington's Praed Street address and distinguishes Small Double from larger rooms, so match the exact category to your space needs.
Marriott: citizenM London Shoreditch: citizenM gives its Holywell Lane address and a king-bedroom format for two adults, with communal living spaces distinct from private bedroom space.
Visit London: South Bank and Waterloo: Visit London describes the South Bank's Thames-side cultural setting, helping you compare a stay there with Paddington and the eastern neighbourhood options.
Visit London: Shoreditch and Hoxton: Visit London describes Shoreditch's evening and dining setting and local transport, which gives context without establishing the sound level of any bedroom.
Heathrow: travel to and from the airport: Heathrow separates its express, Elizabeth line and Underground options, so compare the actual route and final hotel connection rather than just an airport journey label.
Transport for London: plan a journey: TfL provides current local journey planning, which lets you check the stop and final approach for your actual hotel and arrival time.
Transport for London: service status: TfL provides current service disruption information, so recheck the lines you intend to use before relying on a planned airport or local journey.
A dated check records what the source said at that point. It does not guarantee that the stay or route is unchanged. If you spot an error, send the page and the correction. We can then recheck the affected hotel or area, or arrival note.
Start with South Bank if the river-led setting matches your days. Compare Paddington for specific Heathrow or railway plans, and Shoreditch for time in east London. Use the hotel address to test a few daily journeys. The best first base is the one that fits your plans and actual room needs.
Is Paddington the best London area for Heathrow?
It is worth comparing because Heathrow lists rail choices using Paddington. Check your terminal and the full route, then weigh that arrival against the rest of the trip. A convenient airport ride does not settle every daily journey or make Paddington the right answer for another London airport.
Can I choose a London area before checking the family room?
Use the area to make a shortlist, then confirm the room before booking. Check the actual beds and occupancy for all guests. A shared king-bed format, a sofa-bed room and a family category solve different needs even when their hotels all sit in useful areas.
Should I stay in Shoreditch for London evenings?
Compare it when your actual evening plans are in that part of east London. Check the venue-to-hotel return and the next morning's route. Ask about the room outlook separately. A lively area description is not a measurement of noise in the bedroom you will book.
Verdict: where to stay in London
Choose where to stay in London through the trips you will repeat. South Bank fits a river-led visit; Paddington has a clear role for some Heathrow and rail plans; Shoreditch fits an east-London stay. Match that setting to a checked address, then confirm the room format. The airport journey matters, but it should be weighed with the whole visit.
